In a sea of strong eye makeup at tonight’s Met Gala, Jourdan Dunn seemed to have one of the best. That’s thanks to makeup artist Frances Hathaway, who was inspired by the graphic cutouts in Dunn’s dress to create a dual black and intense burgundy eye.

Hathaway gave the Cut an exclusive rundown of how Dunn’s look came together. The main focal point of the look was a super-thick winged cat-eye, which Hathaway drew using Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Blackest Black (Dunn is a model for the brand). As a contrast, the bottom of her eyes were carefully lined with the brand’s Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel in Bad to the Bronze and Pomegranate Punk, while a wash of mauve shadows completely covered her top lids and crease. “It’s a strong look that grounds the dress,” Hathaway explained, speaking to the eyeliner and bold eye colors that balanced out the strength of the dress. For the finished look, Maybelline’s Color Sensational Creamy Matte in Daringly Nude covered Dunn’s lips, making her totally ready for the ball.
