Scarlett Johansson Says She Won’t Be a Preachy Celeb Parent

When Scarlett Johansson and her husband Romain Dauriac welcomed a daughter last September, she wasn’t imbued with the divine wisdom so many celeb moms receive. Accordingly, she won’t tell you how to feed, dress, or raise your own child. “I’m such a newbie at this,” she told the Australian Daily Telegraph. “I always really hate it when actors or people in the spotlight make giant grandiose statements about parenthood because it’s so, so personal. I don’t profess to know anything more about parenting than anybody else.”

Johansson’s statement marks a pleasant departure from the many celebrity-moms-cum-parenting-experts. Like Gisele Bündchen, who once suggested there should be a “worldwide law” that mothers “breastfeed their babies for six months” — and later Instagrammed herself breast-feeding while a team of three did her hair and makeup. Or Goop guru Gwyneth Paltrow, who said she’d “rather die” than let her kid “eat Cup-a-Soup.”

In fact, perhaps the celeb-mom/instant-expert archetype has become so widespread that chill celeb parenting is now coming into vogue. Reflecting on the importance of avoiding helicopter parenting, Elizabeth Banks told People, “If Felix gets a bite of refined sugar in a cookie or something when we’re out — which he’s not allowed to have at our house — I let it go.”
