It would be fair to say that a knack for style and design is just part of the Goodman family DNA. Tonne Goodman is the fashion director of Vogue; Wendy, her sister, is New York Magazine’s own design editor; and their other sister, Stacy, is a senior consultant to Sotheby’s and a leading authority on pre-Columbian art.
The three are profiled in the latest special Art issue of W, where they swap tales of their art-filled New York upbringing (thanks to their mom, Marianne, who had a penchant for the theater, the ballet, and Tina Turner) and working for Anna Wintour.
“I was in awe of her,” Wendy says of Wintour, whom she assisted at Harper’s Bazaar. “Completely mesmerized by someone so focused on her purpose — the discipline, the unwavering confidence. I learned so much from her about what I wasn’t.” (Wintour is now Tonne’s boss at Vogue.)
They also share a few stories of their family pets (their impressive menagerie included four dogs, two guinea pigs, countless gerbils, two parakeets, and an Amazon parrot) and having to share shoes (Tonne would put on ten pairs of knee socks in order to fit into Wendy’s oxfords). As for their fashion sense, they also credit Mom. “I got the abbreviated chic, and she got the embellished chic,” says Tonne, of herself and Wendy. “She got Mummy’s sense of proportion and the touches, like the perfect pin. I don’t really understand jewelry.”
