There’s an All-Women Portrait Intervention at Oxford

There is currently an all-female flashmob of portraits descending on Oxford University. The dining hall of Hertford College is replacing the all-male portrait gallery of famous men with photographs of alumnae who have distinguished themselves as philosophers, politicians, economists, athletes, and business leaders. Jennifer Schuessler at the New York Times reports that it’s “a high-table twist on Judy Chicago’s ‘Dinner Party.’” To note: If this implied that Oxford is acknowledging its distinguished female alumnae by displaying crockery-vaginas, that should be amended. These are just some photographic representations of women’s faces in a dining room.
