Gay Advertising Market Grew in 2009 Despite General Ad Decline

While the ad market tumbled last year throughout the media world, LGBT publications experienced, across the board, a 13.6 percent growth in advertising revenues (compared to a 15.6 percent loss across consumer titles in general). Of course, the $349.9 million in LGBT ad revenue is but a tiny fraction of the $10,533 billion from the whole industry, but even that figure represents a 377 percent growth since 1996. Meanwhile, circulation for gay magazines shrank by 27.6 percent and many titles reduced in frequency — though the weekly magazines/gay guides that you pick up in bars remained relatively unscathed.
